Foamed Glass UK recently completed the installation of FG40 Lightweight Aggregate as the floor base at the new Millom Leisure Centre, working in collaboration with Thomas Armstrong Group.
The new activity and leisure facility includes a 25m swimming pool, sports hall, health club and fitness studio. The project forms part of the wider Millom Town Deal, which secured £20.6m from the UK Government’s Towns Fund alongside match funding to support regeneration in the area.
Innovative Underfloor and Pool Wall Backfill Solution
FG40 Foamed Glass Lightweight Aggregate was laid beneath the floor slabs and as pool wall backfill, providing a lightweight, load-bearing and insulating solution in one single material. Using one material which provides multiple properties simplifies the construction build-up while delivering long-term structural and thermal performance.
Why FG40 Was Selected
Foamed Glass aggregate offers a number of practical and performance led benefits for large scale developments:
- Excellent thermal insulation beneath floor slabs
- Lightweight compared to traditional aggregates, reducing overall load
- Easy to install and level
- Compacts efficiently with a wacker plate (typically four passes)
- Durable, inert and non-combustible (A1 fire rated)
- Manufactured in the UK from recycled glass making it a sustainable product
During the installation process, this material also provided logistical advantages, with up to 54m³ transported per articulated tipper load, improving transport efficiency compared to conventional aggregates.
Simplifying the Build-Up, Enhancing Long-Term Performance
Foamed Glass FG40 continues to demonstrate its suitability for leisure, commercial and public sector developments where reducing structural load, improving insulation performance and simplifying installation are key priorities.
Its use at Millom Leisure Centre highlights how lightweight aggregate solutions can support modern construction methods while contributing to sustainable, UK manufactured building materials.
